Legislator Kopel knows how hard it is to make ends meet today. He's made Nassau more affordable by voting to lower every homeowner's tax burden and eliminating the unfair 2.5% Home Energy Tax.
Nassau County Legislator Howard J. Kopel (LD 7) received the official endorsements of the Nassau County Conservative and Independence Parties this week, earning him three lines on November’s ballot. These significant endorsements recognize Legislator Kopel’s record of working and delivering for our entire community in his first bid for re-election.
“I’m thrilled to receive the Conservative & Independence Parties’ endorsements for re-election. I sincerely appreciate their support and confidence in both me and my ability to work hard and deliver for our entire community,” said Legislator Howard J. Kopel.
Nassau County Legislator Howard J. Kopel and his colleagues on the County Legislature Majority voted today to approve two historic measures that will combine duplicative Nassau County Departments and save taxpayers millions of dollars annually. This departmental merger will also significantly reduce managerial costs by eliminating highly paid personnel costs while maintaining the county’s current high level of services.
“This is just smart government,” said Legislator Kopel. “I am very glad we ensured that all levels of governmental services within the effected departments will remain intact with this merger, while saving taxpayers millions of dollars annually. Saving our working families and seniors’ tax dollars by reducing both bloated administrative salaries and bureaucratic duplication is long overdue,” said Legislator Kopel.
It’s been my priority since taking office last year to right Nassau County’s finances. Thanks to my work, I’m proud to tell you that we have had a remarkable turnaround.
The day I took office, Nassau County faced a staggering $150 million budget deficit. Today, we turned that budget deficit into a $17.2 million surplus. And that’s not it; Moody’s Investors Services, one of Wall Street’s top credit rating agencies, removed Nassau County from its credit watch and also upheld Nassau’s A1 bond rating.

Legislator Howard Kopel, standing at right, addressed a packed room of Island Park residents who came to question him about many of their concerns involving the county.
The meeting room of the library was packed, with people spilling out the doors and into the hallway. Department heads from nearly every county department sat at the front of the room and along the perimeter of the room. County Executive Ed Mangano was originally scheduled to attend, but had to cancel because he was in Washington, D.C. meeting with Vice President Joe Biden with the County Executives of America.
